Bridesmaid Dresses Don’t Have to be Ugly

bridesmaidsIt’s supposedly difficult to argue with the logic behind ugly bridesmaid dresses: the bride should be the most beautiful woman in the ceremony, all eyes should be on her, and so the bridesmaids must wear ugly dresses in order to make sure they don’t, GASP, look better than the bride.

But just like the “you can’t wear black to a wedding” rule, the notion that bridesmaids must look ugly so that they don’t overshadow the bride is outdated. Modern brides are confident. The less women must rely on their looks only and the more they are admired for other qualities, the less cattiness there is between women. The bride IS the most beautiful person in the room – because it’s her special day. All eyes will be on her, regardless of what the bridesmaids wear (well, as long as they don’t wear wedding dresses anyway!)

Brides today are advised to spare their bridesmaids the agony of wearing an ugly dress. Here are a few tips for you to consider when you pick your bridesmaid dresses:

1. To keep your bridal party coordinated, pick a color and a fabric, but allow your bridesmaids to choose the style. This will enable each of the women to pick a silhouette that flatters her own unique shape. Try to choose a color that looks good on most skin tones.

2. If you decide to choose the silhouette yourself, try to go with something simple and classic – a dress that your bridesmaids would be able to wear to future events. Avoid ruffles and extravagant embellishments, and go with a flattering neckline and a universally flattering color.

3. Remember that your bridesmaids’ shoes don’t have to match the outfit exactly – metallic shoes look great with any color:

And black evening shoes are fine too:

Regardless of how great your bridesmaids look, YOU will be the center of attention at your wedding. There’s absolutely no need to torture them with hideous dresses. After all, these women are your family and your closest friends.
